Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor

In a land of sorcery and enchantment, wizards and knights, there is one who stands above the rest in power and secrecy. His name is Magnus Illkor, immortal Wizard-King of the land of Ynor. His rise to power has been almost as precipitous as it has been mysterious, and many nearby duchies pay tribute to him. Magnus is far from a benevolent ruler, however, and there are rumors that he cruelly exploits his subjects.

Whether or not the rumors are true, however, you are certainly not a fan of the man. Magnus has advertised far and wide that he is holding a tournament, a test of skill and luck. The winner will receive riches beyond imagination. The losers, well, they will suffer a worse fate. Whether by necessity, a lust for gold and power, or by force, you've all entered the tournament. You've been whisked away to a small room, awaiting Magnus's announcement with hearts full of trepidation and uncertainty.

Game Rules:

This game is RTD-style. RTD stands for "roll the dice" - you say what you want your character to do, I roll for it, and the result depends on that roll. It's a game-form with a lot of randomness to it, which makes for quick and interesting results.

I'm adding just a few mechanics to this - your characters will have a few stats that will help me keep track of important things:

HP: Pretty self-explanatory. Keeps you alive, lose them and you're dead.
Strength: The damage you do when you hit something.
Toughness: How much you can defend yourself. Reduces damage from a hit.
Dexterity: How agile you are. Keeps you from getting hit.
Skills: Any bonuses you get to a particular type of roll. I encourage flexibility, but a more generalist skill will get you smaller bonuses than a specialist one.
Magic: For magic characters. These are any spells you can cast, as well as magic items you may have.

Combat is simple - each person attacks, and tries to beat 10 + Dexterity on a d20. When you hit, you deal Strength - Toughness damage to HP, down to a minimum of 1 damage per hit. Armor increases your toughness, but heavier armor may decrease your dexterity. Magic can also be used in combat.

To start, there are three basic "Classes" of character:

Physical:
HP: 10
Strength: 2
Toughness: 0
Dexterity: 0
No skills or magic.

Technical:
HP: 10
Strength: 1
Toughness: 0
Dexterity: 1
Starts with 1 skill, no magic.

Magic:
HP: 10
Strength: 1
Toughness: 0
Dexterity: 0
Starts with no skills, but has the ability to learn magical spells and abilities. Starts with one magical scroll.

Finally, each die roll you make gives you 1 experience point (XP). When you get 10, you will gain a level. A level gives you +5 HP instantly, as well as a random stat, skill boost, or magical ability (weighted based on class). Don't stand around in one place making useless checks though! A low roll can very well kill you.

That's basically it for the mechanics, so here's the signup sheet.

Name: What's your character called?
Class: What kind of person are they? If you pick technical, please describe your starting skill, and if you pick magic, please describe your starting spell scroll.
Bio: Why are you here?

The game will start as soon as there are a couple of players. Signups will never close, all I ask is one active character per player. I'll try to update at least once daily, please feel free to yell at me if I don't update for more than a week.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
Name: Limburr

Class: Technical
Starting Skill: Tree-Armament - Limburr tears off a part of his body to use as a makeshift weapon.

Bio: Limburr is a member of a race of living trees known as Woodsmen. For years, his people have been beaten down by the might of Magnus Illkor, and have been driven into service of him and his oppressive rule. When Magnus proposed his tournament, however, Limburr knew that this was his chance. If he was to save his people from Magnus, he had to play by Magnus' rules. And so Limburr entered Magnus' tournament with a single goal in mind. Win the event so that he would have the ability to stick it to the man.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
Name: Ifrit Azazel

Class: Magic. (His starting spell is HELLFIRE, and it specializes in burning, roasting, and incinerating.)

Bio: Ifrit is the great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson of the infamous Duke Malphas, a brutal warlord who once made a pact with a demon in exchange for unimaginable power. (Part of said pact included a curse upon all of his descendants, which explains Ifrit's very obvious horns and red skin.) The Azazel family line hasn't held any major titles for the last seven generations now, and has since been nearly wiped off the face of the earth. As one of the disposed Duke's few surviving heirs, Ifrit has a strong desire to "reclaim his birthright" and intends to use his winnings from the tournament to raise a massive army and carve out a brand new kingdom of his very own. (If anyone asks though, he's of course just here trying to raise money for his own impoverished family and is definitely just a friendly normal guy with no plans for world domination.)

Name: Chrometallica

Class: Physical

Bio: A dragon of unimpressive size. What she lacks in dragony-ness she makes it up with brute strength and attitude. She has major issue with the fact that Magnus has her great-great-etc-grandfather's massive horde and she wants it back. The death of the Sorcerer-King is just icing on cake.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
Name: Chance

Class: Gambler
Starting Skill: Fate Swap - dumps his misfortune on someone else
Bio: Meet Chance, the unluckiest person in the realm. King Magnus has an obsession with money, so much so that he dabbles with the common folk in search of riches. Chance is his bookie. After one-too-many losses, the king finally realized his bookie was bad news. And so he was dumped on the gladiatorial grounds, at which point, the king will gamble on his fate in a tragic twist of irony.

The Gambler is currently wearing a dunce hat with the king's face embroidered on the front and back.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
Name: Magnus Illkor (the real)

Class: Physical

Bio: Magical powers, land, and name were stripped from him years ago by the asshole who now calls himself the immortal wizard-king. Well, he might not be able to cast spells anymore but he's been training the one thing he never bothered - his muscles. Once Magnus wins this damn tournament we'll see who's stupid face is an immortal wizard king when it's punched square in the jaw and thrown off his ostentatious tower.

What? No that tower definitely wasn't built before the fake came into power and is now just a really regrettable reminder of how far the original has fallen. What are you talking about?

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
Name: Dr. Wyrm

Class: Technical.
Skill: I like to play the drums - Dr. Wyrm thinks he's getting good. But he can handle criticism.

Bio: Dr. Wyrm isn't a real doctor, but he is a real wyrm. He is an actual wyrm. Which is to say, he's a fairly serpentine dragon carrying a pair of oversized drumsticks and an entire drum set.

Dr. Wyrm lives like a wyrm, meaning setting things on fire and stealing gold to sleep on. Except instead of gold, he stole most of the drums in the kingdom to practice on. His friend Rabbi Vole told him about the tournament, which he severely misinterpreted as some sort of music competition. He brought his own set of drums and everything.

He hopes his victory will mean that someday, somebody else besides him will call him by his stage name. They will call him Dr. Wyrm.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
You all stand alone in a small room, waiting nervously for the tournament to start. Suddenly, an image appears before you - it is the Wizard-King himself.

"Hello, my dear contestants. I'm ever so glad you've decided to join in my little game. Now, the rules are simple - I'm going to send you to a special realm I've made, just for this tournament, and your job is to find the way out! That's it."

He turns away from you, and the illusion flickers.

"Oh, one more thing - there can only be one winner, so only one person can leave! That's all folks, good luck!"

You feel a brief moment of disorientation, and then you find yourselves in a dark and musty dungeon. You're all in separate cells, and there are several others in there with you.

You see what appears to be a moving tree, creaking in the leftmost cell.

Across from that is a red-skinned, horned man, looking quite devilish.

Next to him is a rather small dragon, pressing against the bars.

Again across is a poor-looking fellow in a dunce cap.

The final two prisoners are someone who looks remarkably like Magnus, instead... more buff? And another dragon, this one inexplicably with a drumset.

You all stare at each other warily, waiting for some sort of answer as to what's going on.

If the problem is the different value for the random number, would rolling 2D20 then dividing the result by 2 work?

If the problem is that you only want to roll one dice, would it work if the roll is increased or decreased to be closer to 10 or 11?

If the problem is something else, I'll need to know more about what the issue is in order to offer more suggestions.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
The problems are
a. - it's a bit metagaming to exploit statistics.
b. - it doesn't really make sense as a skill (why would being a veteran let you roll differently?). Related to a, I allowed Credit's ability because it made sense and because it was worded flexibly enough to allow me to balance it.
c. - it's hard to balance because I want skills to be able to improve, and I don't see a way to improve this without making it too good.
d. - it makes a "natural 1" impossible, which is counter to the point of an rtd game (that there is a high level of random chance, and that there is always the small chance of things going spectacularly badly)
e. - related to balance, it's too powerful - it makes ALL your rolls better, which is a generalist skill, and it does it by quite a bit (removing nat 1 as well as adding 0.5 to the expected value of every roll). This goes against my desire for generalist skills to make everything a little bit better and specialist skills to make one thing a lot better.

Simply put, it's unworkable as a skill, and I'd like you to pick something else.

RE: Escape! The Deadly Challenge of Magnus Illkor [RTD]
The prisoners stare at each other, before the silence is broken by some very nervous drumming from Dr. Wyrm. It isn't very good, and in fact a drumstick breaks. (4)

The Magnus Illkor lookalike attempts to break out of the cell using his muscles. Instead, he breaks his arm on the bars, taking 5 damage (1).

Chrometallica manages to bend the bars a little, but not enough to get her draconic body through (10).

Ifrit finds a loose stone in the wall. Behind it he discovers a half-dug escape tunnel, along with some stale hardtack. (19)

Limburr tries to tear off a branch to use as a lever. The stick isn't very good, though, and he takes 1 damage. The branch gives +1 damage for the next 2 hits, and then it will break (8).

As the prisoners try to escape, they hear the thumping of hobnailed boots. A trio of guards walks in, led by the warden of the prison.

"Listen up, you maggots! You're in the dungeons of Castle Dread, and tomorrow you'll start working in the mines. Best not be trying any funny business, or else you might not last long in there!"

Behind them, four more prisoners are dragged in. First is a grey-haired woman with a knightly demeanor. Next is a robed man, muttering a prayer. Following that is a shifty-looking guy in dirty clothes, and finally there's a weird shadowy shape that somehow is solid and clapped in irons. They're all thrown into empty cells, and the guards leave.

Dr. Wyrm searches for more drumsticks. He finds that he has an infinite supply hidden in the drumset. (20)

Maxine finds some dirt. (4)

Taava bends the bars some. It's still a bit tight, but he could probably escape if he squeezed through. (18)

Chrometallica has less luck - the bars bend only a half inch before she runs out of strength. (8)

Limburr digs at the ground with the stick. The ground is very hard, and part of the stick breaks off. You lose one durability on the stick. (3)

Avery finds some rusty metal lockpicks in the cell. They look like they might break if you put too much force on them, but they could open the lock with a little luck. (15)

Ifrit digs at the tunnel with a flat stone. The earth is soft, and he makes some progress. He reaches a stone wall in front of him. (15)

"Magnus" tries to set his broken arm. He manages to rig up a splint with some old wood in the cell and some scraps of cloth. You regain 3 hp. (19)

Vyk casts steal - he manages to grab a key from one of the guards, though he doesn't know what it opens. (14)

Somehow.

Third times the charm! She punches the bars further, with her mouth.

It means your spell has two uses, and it's rechargeable (see the spell description for the recharge conditions). Any number in brackets next to a spell or item is its number of uses.

"And why do you want to kill me? I've done nothing to any damn goddess, and I'm sure as hell not a wizard."

Anymore. For now.

The real Magnus Illkor looks around his cell for something else to pry the bars open with, since now he can't use his hands.

Taava pushes through the gap in the bars, still staring at that one guy.

"You're not a wizard? Are you sure?"

Chance has felt helpless. Merely standing there, holding the bars in agony.

He tries making a deal with a guard. Odds are, guards get bored and gambling oughta lift their spirits!

"Do I look like a wizard?"

He does not. Anymore.

"You're probably looking for that godforsaken lookalike who stuck us in this hole. That damn wizard-king stole everything from me so you'd best bet I'm out for blood as well."
