"No, nothing important. We just were talking about whether or not to stop the caravan, and we decided to keep moving. Now get some rest, you smell like a distillery."

When she heard the commotion, she stuck her head out of the sleeping wagon.

"Something the matter?"

Theresa is met with the sight of a Hermit-Crab-Snail-Monster attempting to drag the caravaneer into the oasis.

Molly just stared at the monstrosity, her face contorted in pure terror. She couldn't move, paralyzed. Her mind was blank as the image of the creatures visage burned itself into her eyes. Her heart pounded and she could hardly breathe. Then....

"EL DOLOOOOOOR!!"

That scream knocked her out of her paralyzation. She turned around and ran, stopping to grab a hoe and hide behind the food cart.

Allie gasped harshly, sending herself into a fit of weak coughs. Leech seemed startled, with darned good reason, and the girl hopped down from the cart and carefully approached her. She patted her shoulder gently, shushing her. "Don't lose yourself Leech. How are we supposed to get out of this if you're huffing and stomping all over the place?"

"TRAMPLIN' TARNATION!"

Copper Teeth Pete had been panning for gold in the oasis nearby when the thing crawled out. He grabs his pickax and runs to swing it at the creature's shell.

"YOU CAN'T TAKE HIM! WE NEED HIM TO GET TO THE GOLD, DAGNABBIT!"

Rowan wakes up to the screaming. He quickly throws on some proper clothes and grabs his smaller weapons as he walks out, an annoyed look on his face.

"Goddamn bandits, always trying to -" he freezes. "What the..."

He bolts back in, and seconds later emerges with a shotgun, frantically loading it as he runs to the scene and prepares to blast the monster. If he can get a clean shot at the thing's arm, he'll try and blow it off and free the Caravaneer.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter One: East of Eden
El Dolor Rushes in and attempts to tackle the beast! He bolts for the creature's head and is intercepted mid-way through, caught in the creature's second hand. The creature waves him in the air, screaming his terrifying scream!

Doc Valentine's shot misses the creature, hitting the sand next to it. The creature swivels its terrifying, eyeless countenance to face him!

Theresa grabs the reins of the runaway cart! She fails to calm the horses, and they continue stampeding straight forward!

Molly is in solid cover, and has a view of the situation. She can see that the creature's body seems to curve into its shell, confirming that there should be some meat in there!

Allie manages to get a hold of herself, then calms Leech! Leech is steady as can be, now. There is trust in her eyes.

Pete drives his pickaxe at the shell of the beast and it nearly flies out of his hands! He only barely manages not to lose grip of it.

Rowan fires his gun at the beast's shell, but his trembling hands cause his aim to be just slightly off. A few pellets hit the beast, but most just uselessly plink off.

Coyote follows suit, carefully aiming her shotgun at the beast, even delivering a witty one-liner! When she pulls the trigger... nothing happens! Oh, hell! The gun is jammed!

The beast shakes El Dolor in the air violently before throwing him back into the lake! Lucky for the luchador he lands near the shore and manages to stay afloat! It pushes itself several feet deeper into the water!

Theresa pulled at the reins again, but she realized that it would have little effect. She instead tried to calm the horses in another way, reciting soothing-sounding bible passages while she attempted to direct the horses in a circle. If she could regain control, she reckoned that they'd be able to circle around and get back to the campsite. Theresa prayed that the others would manage to get rid of the monster by then.

Allie patted her dear companion, smiling bright. There was something deep between her and her horse. "Good girl Leech."

Returning to the scene at hand, she squinted, taking a good look at the assorted action. Runaway carts. She couldn't grab those quickly enough, no use bothering. Someone in the sleep cart could take care of that anyhow, bail if they needed. Molly was crouched by the food cart on her own, and Allie ran for her, holding a hand out to Leech to tell her to stay put.

Catching her breath, the girl crouched down beside Molly. "Are you... Ok?" She huffed, peering around the cart to examine the creature as best she could.

El Dolor rockets out of the water and latches onto the creature's shell! He delivers a solid punch to it, creating a crack!

Doc Valentine's bullet hits its mark and shoots straight through and through! A gaping hole emerges from the opposite of the monster's side. Black blood begins pouring forth from its wounds.

A miracle! The nun's prayers are answered! Theresa manages to calm the horses and pull them back.

Rowan's blast hits the beast straight in the face, blowing a chunk out of its head! It screeches without a mouth, oil pouring down its face and from its remaining eye.

Huckleberry shatters the shell, revealing a small hole!

Coyote blows away the remainder of the beast's head! Its screams grow in intensity, and its stump of a neck oozes with this strange viscous black stuff.

The Creature flails wildly, slamming the Caravaneer into the ground repeatedly before throwing him down like a doll and leaving him limp on the ground.

Welp, no time for doin' nothin'. Allie took a deep breath, cleared out her throat, and place a hand on Molly's shoulder. "I'm gonna try to pull the Caravaneer back and away from the thing. Be careful hun."

Much good as that could do, anything was better than just sitting around. She fixed up her mask, squared herself, and took off. Only slightly out of breath, she reached down under the caravaneer's arms and attempted to drag him away from the Oasis, and its long-armed monster.

"Sir? Do you hear me? Don't worry, you're looking good for it, you'll be well, we'll get you right!" She coughed, and focused more on the draggin' than the talkin'.

Molly stared after Allie in disbelief, that frail and sickly woman went ahead and approached the monster anyways just to save the caraveneer. Molly battled with herself for a few seconds, looking from the creature to Allie to the caraveneer. She grunted.

"Aw hell...!"

Molly ran out alongside Allie and helped her move the body as best she could, doing her damn best to ignore the beast.

"Man that thing stinks up close...!" She said, near sobbing.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter One: East of Eden
Valentine lands a GRAZING HIT across the beast's back!

El Dolor strikes a magnificent pose and begins pulling the shell open! His hands bleed but he eventually tears it open enough to create a hole the size of a fist, revealing a horrifying sight.

Inside the shell is a flat surface of pale, almost translucent skin. A face. Planted on it are a pair of eyes, their pupils dialated to take up the majority of the visible sphere, a mouth full of sharp, gnashing teeth, and several holes on the face, secreting some sort of ooze.

Coyote and Rowan hold their fire.

Huckleberry strikes true! Copper-Teeth Pete gets in a mighty swing that smashes through a portion of the shell. Between his attacks and El Dolor's, about half the shell has now snapped off! They can now both see the horrific monstrosity beneath.

Sister Theresa gets the cart into a decent position, far out of the creature's reach.

Allie and Molly manage to summon strength nearly superhuman for their size. They successfully manage to dash the Caravaneer all the way from the beast's grip to the sleep cart before the creature can even react!

jesus fuck you guys good rolls

The creature casts its gaze towards Pete. Though the prospector makes a valiant attempt at escaping, the creature's claws are too fast. It has him in its grip!

Allie huffed, kneeling down in the sand. That was ridiculous. Two tiny women shouldn't have been able to carry that man so far, so quick. She laughed lightly, and thanked Molly. "I'd be less amused if that didn't work out so well."

She looked to Rowan as he turned to shoot at the monster. In her haste, she hadn't thought to look at him. She leaned over the Caravaneer, examining him for his state.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter One: East of Eden
An explosion of shells, blood and viscera erupts as the gang lets loose an all out assault. El Dolor, Coyote, Doc, and Rowan group up on the face and fill it with lead and shards of itself.

The beast thrashes about for a moment, screaming an ungodly scream. It turns with a surprising amount of speed and lunges at the group, seeking to impale anyone it can get its hand on with its sharpened fingers. It's within an inch of reaching Doc's lungs when a bullet whizzes out of nowhere and strikes it right in the elbow, tearing the arm clean off.

Miss Martha Mailer at your service! Seems she was grabbing the meat-drying cart.

Within moments, the beast dies of bloodloss, its futile last attempt at vengeance spurned by gods and men alike.

Back in the wagon, Allie, Molly and Theresa tend to the Caravaneer's wounds. The man is still breathing, though his humerus is sticking through his skin. It will need to be sanitized and mended as soon as possible. He also has a few broken ribs, but miraculously, his spine remains unharmed. You also notice he still has a face, not that that was ever in any doubt. That would be a really dumb assumption to make! Sure is a good thing none of you were that dumb!

Amy appears over a dune, pistol in hand, and surveys the destruction: The beast is dissolving into some thick paste, now, though she catches a glimpse of its form. Its shell and teeth remain intact. A fizzing noise can be heard from the body when up close.

Copperteeth Pete falls safely to the ground!

COMBAT END.

Doc Valentine reloaded his revolver and proceeded to holster it. That done, he walked over to the caravaneer.

"Those are very serious wounds," Valentine noted, getting down to look at them. "And I have no medical supplies. If Carmen could part with some of her precious liquor, I could likely sanitize it, though I'll still require cloth for mending. Clean cloth would be preferable. Straight wood for a splint, as well."

Amanda does her best to watch Carmen's path, following as needed but cautious to not rush too close. The booze can't be that far, and surely even an alcoholic can understand reason in the right moment.

Of course, if Carmen wouldn't see reason, it is always easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.

Allie nodded to the doctor and stood. "I'll start the pot then."

She had a few books she was sure would be useless. Something sacrilegious about burning books, but she didn't want to start taking wagons apart, and she had an idea for the rest of the cloth anyhow. She climbed into her wagon and pulled out a few books: a theoretical physics textbook, an older math textbook she figured she didn't need anymore, and some awful novel her classmate SWORE she'd love. She'd miss the math book more than she'd miss Pride and Prejudice.

Setting a small amount of buffalo fat between the pages, she formed a small tent with the books and... Well. She didn't quite think this through. Not like they had any sticks around. A piece of flint would just be TOO convenient. She squinted at her own foolish handiwork. Turning, she called, "Sorry, Doc? You still smoke don't you? Could I borrow your light?"
