RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
Jay frowned, then looked outside, then said a word a priest really shouldn't say. He went out and started making sure everyone was inside a cabin, Dolph taken care of first. Then, he started doing a role call between the cabins to make sure everyone was here and inside safely. Stomping busily through the mud.

Theresa goes to help Rowan dig.

"Good idea! It would be a shame to have built these cabins and have them be flooded by the rain."

She looks a bit scandalized by Father Jay's cuss word though.

Coyote, Theresa and Rowan begin their digging! Copper Teeth Pete, Doc Val and El Dolor spend their nothin-time noticing Arleen sliding her fingers up between Allie's and clutching her hand. Al Father Jay confirms everyone except the diggers are safe in their cabins!

Catherine's eyes go wide as someone speaks to her for the first time in months. She smiles to Flo and Molly. "Oh!! I'm... I'm doing okay. I'm still really scared, and I don't know why I was asleep for all those weeks, but I'm trying to keep it togeth----"

She is cut off by a massive creaking-cracking sound. Dust rises in the distance, even through the rain, in the direction of the water.

Oh.

Oh, that can't be good. Flo's head jerks towards the sound, her eyes wide as she stares at it.

"What-- ah. What's that? Mister Valentine...? We ain't expectin' visitors." Her gaze travels to Molly, and then Catherine. "Thinkin' we gotta go."

He'd go check it out.

Allie got herself a good hand hold, but the other patted her side, ensuring she had her piece on her. And a knife. Ol Allie Six Knives might be the required Allie today. She rolled her shoulder carefully, hoping she wouldn’t need it today. “... Flo, Catherine, Molly, why don’t we just... get ready to get moving? In case it’s that sort of day...”

Catherine shakes her head. "I... I feel like I gotta go. There's something pulling me out there..." She follows after Flo, tugging on her sleeve. "Please. Take me with you..."

The group finds nothing in the immediate vicinity.

The dust ceases in the distance, but the noise drones on, steady and inhuman. It is not violent, not wrathful, but calm, menacing.

"Kkkkkriicckokoko-ko-ko-kok-k-keehhh..."

Whatever it is, it's getting closer. The noise is beginning to ring all around you. You get the feeling that if you don't journey out to confront it, it will be upon you, and all that you've worked toward over the past few weeks may be for nothing...

Yeah, alright! Flo starts out with Catherine on her sleeve, laying a gentle hand on the girl's shoulder.

"No worries, Miss Catherine, we'll go out and see it together, yeah? Ain't no reason for you to go out alone no more. Does it feel bad?" She frowns at the droning. glancing back at whoever might be near. "Feels kinda bad t'me..."

Allie... didn’t like the sound of that. Her expression turned grim, and she stood, patting her pocket with her free arm. Gun? There, good. “... Yes. Let’s see what it is this time. I don’t think it feels well either, but... better facing it together.”

She looked over her shoulder at Arleen. “You coming too? I’m not letting the girls go out there themselves.”

Rowan wiped rain and sweat out of his eyes as he puts down his makeshift shovel and stares out towards the sound.

"Reckon that's a problem. Should of figured."

He goes inside, grabs his pistols, derringers, and a knife, putting them in his coat. He looks over anyone remaining behind.

"You folks staying should grab the shotguns and rifles, in case the worst happens. They're unlikely to do us much good out in this rain."

With that, he heads back outside and joins the others checking out whatever was approaching.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
A long, wet arm reaches from out between the trees.

Out from behind it emerges a second, and then a face.

A long, gaunt face stares you down. It's almost human, except for two things: First, across its mostly human skin are scattered patches of scales, similar to trout scales. Second, in place of a mouth is a fleshy proboscis, though its structure is more insectoid in shape. Its eyes are sunken baby blues, darting from one to the other.

The structure of the rest of the creature is a cruel mockery of humanity. Its torso is freakishly long, twisted in places, more akin to the body of a dragonfly than that of a man. Thankfully, its scales cover up its junk. Its limbs end in hands and feet, but it walks on all fours, and the arms and legs themselves are bizarre. They are about ten feet long, their joints are placed haphazardly and unevenly, and they pulsate with tensed sinew and muscle. As you reach closer to the ends of the limbs, the scales intensify. Though they are thin, they seem incredibly strong.

The beast stares at you. Its jaw seems to unhinge as a number of smaller proboscises emerge. Each of them seems to be... salivating.

WELL. That was especially unnatural, especially with the grand, unnatural scheme of things.

Coyote goes off to get her shotgun so she can blow this...chupacabra's face off. Most definitely not a chupacabra, but giving it a name certainly makes it less terrifying.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
"Holy father protect us." Jay spoke, blinking through the rain jn shocked horror at the abomination. He'd heard the groups stories but seeing this now struck him with the reality of this, what must be a supernatural and unholy being. This shell of a human possessed by foulness, a mockery of natural life. No wonder it had come in the rain and night, for nothing like that could be imagined to walk under the light of the heavens above.

It was all Jay could do to remain standing. "Woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” Truly the end times were here, or at least Satan thought so anyway. He looked around and picked up a stick with trembling hands, it was a monster in flesh, and so could be best back, he took comfort in that at least.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
The soft noise of the rain is ripped apart by the thunder of your guns. A hail of bullets slams into the beast, its flesh ripping as bullets ripple out through it. The children rush off towards Leech as he gallops in the group's direction. All of them run to meet him, except Catherine, who stands deathly still, staring this thing in the eye, her own eyes wide with a transfixed look.

Over the roar of the gunfire, the roar of a luchador rings out across the night. El Dolor rushes forward, his arm still recovering in its cast. The monster is flailing about in pain at the feel of bullets in its flesh. It lashes out, a long, sharp nail raking across Dolor's abdomen and opening its contents to the world. He's swept three yards to the side.

Doc Valentine rushes to save him as the monster's bloodshot, enraged eyes track in toward El Dolor. It lunges. Valentine raises his gun to fend it off, but it is empty.

The nail extends out from its hand as it lands, turning into something of a claw. It lashes out. El Dolor stands, his insides barely contained in his stomach, and lunges at Valentine, shoving him out of the way.

He is bisected, but his sacrifice saves Valentine. Rather than losing his lower half, Valentine merely loses an arm.

The doctor's luck finally ran out, but the bold brawler spared him from the turning of fate's wheel.

The Caravaneer stops in shock for only a moment before throwing a lasso 'round the beast's hind leg. In a near coordinated maneuver, Martha fires a rifle round through its knee. It collapses to the ground, flailing about violently with sharpened fingers outstretched.

...

Jay finds his stick - a hickory stick, solid and surprisingly sharp. It will most certainly do.

Theresa finds a wood-chopping ax, its sharp blade gleaming with the holy might of the Lord.

Coyote gets her fuckin' boomstick.

Jay lowers his stick, breathes heavily and then begins charging forward, levelling his stick like a bayonet. Whilst it's leg is wounded and held down is the best time to try and charge it hopefully. As he stomps through the mid, he prays that his strike will be guided true, trying to mentally steel himself against the idea of following El Color's fate.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
Ok everyone else could be alarmed but power through- Allie screamed. Like she had at the feeling of thousands of still-used bones crunching under the wheels of the death machine brought to life, she screamed because out the fifteen people she even knew anymore, one was dead, horribly dead, and one may just be about to join him. Between the rain, and the tears, and the cold sweat of fear, the little woman was drenched, and trembling.

Allie didn’t get to put that aside to unpack later. Panicbrain said, run, hide, and it was only the look on Catherine’s face that reminded her that maybe others needed taking care of first. Breathing hard, Allie ran as fast as her legs and lungs would take her, and grabbed Catherine by the arm. “CATH- GO!” She yelled, trying to drag her away if she wouldn’t get to the freaking horse.

Seeing the carnage, Rowan keeps firing wildly at the creature. It takes him several seconds to calm down and realize he ran out of bullets long before Dolor died. Panting and doing his level best not to panic, he looks around for any large branches or objects he could use to help bludgen the monster to death, and if he can't find any (or if it gets up to attack more) he tries shooting out its other limbs with the derringers.

That's too much. Not just Mister El Dolor, but Mister Valentine, too? Two of the men Florence trusted most in the world? Rather than scream, though, Florence is silent. Only her eyes widen as she takes this all in, a loud, sort of ringing starting up in her ears instead. She doesn't hear Allie scream, or much of anything as adrenaline fills her and her heart hammers.

She's gotta focus, though. Her hand clamps around Catherine's arm as well, tugging the girl backwards. Her other hand finds Molly's arm, and vice-grips it, pulling HER, too.

IT'S TIME TO FUCKING GO. IT IS BEYOND TIME TO GO. HER EYES ARE WIDE AND HER FIGHT OR FLIGHT IS UP AND IT IS TIME TO VERY MUCH GO. That thing took out El Dolor and none of the teenage girls were gonna be anywhere near enough for it. Nuh-uh.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
Valentine hit the ground, his brain trying to register what had happened. His right arm was gone. He'd never perform surgery again, he'd never fire a rifle or a shotgun again. He'd have trouble reloading a revolver...hell, he'd have trouble even working in the fields at this point, or building anything.

He was nothing anymore. With a single swipe of its tail, the monster had taken just about everything from Valentine.

There was one way out, though. To go out the way El Dolor went out. To go down fighting this damn thing. Then the others wouldn't have to worry about patching him up. Just another body to bury, or leave to the wolves.

He wouldn't care for long. He grabbed whatever suitable weapon happened to be nearby and rushed the creature in a suicide charge, aiming for its eyes. If nothing was nearby, he'd go in with his remaining fist.

He didn't care. He was so done with this crap. They'd been promised Eden, and Eden was just as bad as the rest of the damn wastes. At this point, he'd take oblivion.

Theresa sees El Dolor and Valentine fall, and is momentarily conflicted. Her christian duty says that she should give El Dolor whatever rites he needs for his soul to pass into the embrace of the Lord... but it is also her duty to the living to make sure that his sacrifice is not in vain. She sees Valentine trying to charge the beast again and makes a decision, running around the creature to try and bury her axe in its head from behind. She hopes that she can stop it before it hurts anyone else.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
Rowan grasps a branch, not bothering to try and identify it in the course of the chaos. It seems sturdy enough!!!!

Flo steals away Catherine and Molly who steals away Lizzie who steals away Trent. Leech stops obediently for them. It's clear that, at max, four of you can fit on her back at once - and that's assuming the very tiny Catherine and Trent are among those four. Someone will have to stay back!

Allie squeezes the trigger with quaking fingers and from behind a screen of tears. Her shot goes wide, but that might be for the best, with everyone closing in. Just as she does, she feels a pair of arms wrap around her from behind and lift her up off the ground. She can tell by the particular squeeze (and the voice that soon follows) that it's Arleen. "We're gettin' you outta here!!! Them kids ain't goin' in them woods alone!"

Coyote fires a pair of shells straight into this creature's head. The head falls limp, but its limbs continue thrashing about. As they do, the sound of flesh against wetness slurps forth, and out from the beast's belly a large eye opens up, casting its gaze over you.

Not for long, though. In spite of the changes, Theresa, Rowan, and the Father's momentum carries them forward, and one after the next, they all bury their weapons into the ocular portal. A gurgling noise fills the air as the beast's insides begin bubbling up from under its skin. It's not dead.

Valentine stumbles after, limply swinging his pistol against the creature's torso. He's clearly not in fighting condition, but he's trying anyway.

MMMMMMMMMMM...Coyote took out a eye once. Don't ask. It was a human eye but what is clearly in front of her is a monster eye. Perhaps it still had a lot of give? Coyote shot at it, hopefully the buckshot will scrape it up better than a fork.

As said, don't ask.

It was then that Valentine was struck with a thought.

What if people tried to rescue him from dying?

And this thing cut THEIR arms and legs off?

Shit...

Yeah...

Yeah that'd suck...

There's better ways to die than getting other people maimed or killed.

Valentine would move as far away from the thing as he could. Then he'd probably pass out from blood loss. Maybe he'd die there? That'd be nice...

"Shoot it again Susanne!" Rowan is a little too panicked to catch his mistake. He hits the thing one or two more times to give Coyote time to reload, and then yanks Theresa and Jay back so she can shoot, and then remains back ready to defend against whatever other tricks this monster might have.

RE: Hope Rides On - Chapter Three: Gentle is the Night
Valentine manages to stumble four yards away before passing out.

Coyote's shotgun aims true and blasts: A chunk of the eye goes flying! The odd gurgling intensifies, and the eye rolls out of the beast's belly at a frankly alarming speed.

'Roll' is, perhaps, not the most appropriate word for it. It seems to be staring straight ahead, and it is propelled by a force unseen.

Rowan, Theresa, and the Reverend's weapons catch the meat of the eye as it speeds past them, and they rip deep into it (as evidenced by the odd, pulsating flesh at the ends of their weapons - and a considerable amount of it as well!) but they fail to slow it at all. It continues rolling, rolling, rolling ahead.

Allie and Arleen manage to catch up with Flo and Molly. Just as they do, a giant fucking eyeball rips past them heading straight towards the horse, single baby blue iris and single black pupil growing wider as it gets closer to Leech.

Yeah, that's scary as fuck! Florence can't see whatever Molly's talking about, but that don't matter. She's gonna go ahead and shove Mo outta the way- tackle, if she must- away from the SCARY THING WHIZZING AT THEM AND LEECH. If she had the ability to shove anyone else ON the horse or in the line of fire outta the way, she'd do that too, but...

Sorry Leech. You can't save 'em all. No siree.
