Steam Summer Giveaway 2014
[Image: GiveawayHeader_zps2c6c310a.png]

Hey there kids, do you like VIDEO GAMES? Do you enjoy getting video games FOR FREE? Of course you do. Well don't touch that dial, because today's your lucky day!

Some of you may remember last summer, when Beloved Forum Hero Kocel decided to start up a White Elephant Game Giveaway, in an attempt to get rid of the enviable collection of Steam games in his inventory. The game sort of died after awhile before it ever reached its conclusion, but hey, it's the thought that counts. This thread is somewhat of a spiritual successor to that game from last year, and we here at Coldblooded & Palamedes Enterprises are dedicated to seeing it all through to the end, preferably sometime within the next couple of months.

There are however, going to be a few rule changes. Instead of the "White Elephant" type giveaway from last time, we're going to be using a system that we call "Penny Sales".
_______________________________________________________________

It works like this: Every single game up for grabs will be revealed right at the very beginning of the game. (Or a bit before, more likely.) Every player is then given 100 points to divide among whichever games that they like best. After everybody has distributed their points, we will then determine the winners of the four most popular games currently on the table. The more points that somebody has placed into a game, the better their odds of walking away with it.

For example, imagine that a game has 200 points on it, with the points distributed like so:
Player A - 100 points
Player B - 50 points
Player C - 25 points
Player D - 25 points

Player A has a 50% of winning that game since they have 50% of the points sitting on it right now. Player B has a 25% chance of winning it, and Players C and D each have a 12.5% chance of winning it. If any other players decide to jump onto the game before the deadline, it drags down the odds for each of the other four players by however many points that they happen to throw in.

If Player D decides that they don't like sharing these odds with the rest of the pack, they can always pull back out and move those points elsewhere.
Alright, so let's say that you placed all of your points into the very popular games in the first round, and didn't win any of them. That sucks right? Well yeah, but it's not the end of the world. At the end of each round, the lucky winners will each receive the game that they won via Steam and then leave the game. The remaining players will each receive another 25 points as a consolation prize, and will be given another 48 hours to distribute them before the next round begins. Rinse and repeat until every single player is matched up with a game.

This is a slightly more complicated system than what we've done before, but I like it better for a number of reasons:
1. No more waiting on other players to basically just pick a random number out of a hat. If somebody doesn't show up to spend all of their points in a given round, the points will still be there to use whenever they come back. And if they don't show up for multiple turns, then they're really just freeing up the more popular games to be taken by somebody else.
2. Players have more say in which games they get, and have basically zero chance of ending up with a game that they already have. (Unless they really want a second copy for some reason I guess?)
3. Players are less likely to feel cheated by having a game that they really wanted ripped out from under them at the last second.
4. It's more streamlined, and the early winners can start playing their game almost immediately after they leave with their prize.

_______________________________________________________________

To apply all you're going to need is a Steam account and a willingness to accept free games with no strings attached. (And if you don't already have one of these, they're all free and very easy to set up, trust me.) BTW, if I'm not already friends with you on Steam, you're going to have to add me (and possibly Pala) on Steam before we can send your game to you.

This game is also being run simultaneously on the Eagle Time Forums as well, which is right here in case you want to keep an eye on your fellow players or something.

P.S. Special thanks to Palamedes, Kocel, Demonsul, Amosmyn, and Vancho for their game donations, and for helping to get this thing off the ground. You guys are great.

Hey, hit me up, I've still got those games, untouched. If you guys can get a system running that will work I'll shoot you the titles to add to the pile. I've wanted to try this again but just have never found the time, effort, or confidence that I could figure out something that would actually work while being a little fun.

RE: Steam Summer Giveaway 2014
At this point I think we already have more games that people have donated now than we do slots that are ever likely to get filled.

Of course, we could always do a second game at a later date if necessary, or just make this one a "2 for the price of 0" doubleheader or something.

Who would have thought that giving free games would be so difficult? (P.S. Invite your friends.)

I'm assuming if, say, 10 people put 100 points into the same tittle, they all have 10% chance of getting it.
And then 9 people walk away with 25 points, and 1 person walks away with the game.

That's exactly it - though remember, that each round in which you don't get a game you'll also get extra points, so putting everything into one game and then not getting it won't mean that you're stuck with some random game you already have/have played/what have you.

Nah, the steam group is a totally separate thing that nobody has to join if they don't want to. You will however have to be friends with either me or Pala (or maybe Kocel) on Steam in order to receive the game though. We'll let you know who that is whenever we figure out which game you're getting.

It still is, and there are actually many more still open after that. In fact, I just started up a new signup thread over on Eagle Time as well.

We're going to be cross-posting everything major that happens there over here, so you guys don't have to keep up with that thread if you don't want to. But you should all know that there are going to be players over there signing up that might not ever decide to post over here, so just keep that in mind when choosing which games to spend your points on.

It probably doesn't need to be said, but we're not going to split games between each forum. You'll all be sharing the exact same options the way things are now because how would we even begin to sort out which forum gets what.

On the other hand they all seem to be obsessed over Bad Rats for some reason so those of you who aren't on a mystical quest to catch every bad game there is...

QE: Are probably fine was supposed to end that sentence. That's what I get for trying to be clever.

Yup, that's exactly it.

Also probably doesn't need to be said but signing up in both won't let you get twice as many points and games, though that would be an interesting and hilarious way to get the two forums to interact more.

Yo Dpaul and/or Pala

Are trading shenanigans allowed?

Like, say me and Pilot both want a game, and I offer him 30 points to back his other points out of the running? I'm super tired right now so I think that particular scenario could be broken and or pointless

Or say could I offer points to people in exchange for signing up for DHI because dammit that's never going to fill up

Can I mine for points with my sweet rig

I don't have a sweet rig

Can I exchange my points for a sweet rig

I'm going to say no to trading shenanigans, just to keep point tallying from being an even bigger nightmare for me than it's already going to be. That, and because I easily could see someone trying to abuse that rule through extortion or something.

You always could trade games with somebody else afterwards though, if you both really wanted to do that for some reason?

(Although, it is tempting to offer bribes in exchange for DHI signups, I admit.)

RE: Steam Summer Giveaway 2014
Alright, so we should be starting very soon now. But before we begin, I've got a few short announcements/reminders to get out of the way first.

1. The full rules list is in the OP, but for those of you who need a refresher, the short version is this: Everybody gets 100 points to start off with, which they can distribute however they want into the various available games*. The more points you have on a title relative to everybody else, the better your chances of winning that game. After each round, we determine the winners of the four most popular games, and everybody else gets another 25 points to deposit wherever they want into the remaining games. Rinse and repeat until everybody has a copy of their chosen game. Sounds simple enough right? Right.
(*Up until a certain point that is. If I see you trying to distribute single odd digits worth of points into dozens of different titles at once, I am probably going to ignore you and ask you distribute them in a way that doesn't make me want to cry whenever I start thinking of tallying up the current points.)

2. Keep in mind that this game is being run simultaneously on both the Chocolate Pi and Eagle Time Forums. I will do my best to keep the points list updated for both forums at least once a day, but you might want to consider keep an eye on both threads if you're worried about somebody stacking too many points onto the same game as you. You can find a link to the other thread in the OP, or alternately, right here.

3. Please make sure to post all of your point deposits in either this thread and/or the other one, and NOT through PMs or any other offsite chat services. This is partly because I don't want Pala and myself to be trying to record actions coming from eight directions at once, and partly because there's not any real need for them to be secret in the first place anyway.

4. A good fraction of the games that we have up for grabs here are link/codes that were picked up from places such as humblebundle.com. I'm fairly sure that most of these codes should work, but on the off chance that you get one that doesn't work for some reason, just let us know and we'll try to give you a choice between a few other backup games instead. To redeem a game code, just open up the Library tab on Steam and look in the bottom left corner for the option to add a new game. It should look something like this.

5. Since I expect the first round to likely end up being much more chaotic and high stakes than the following rounds (due to the higher point values and so on), I've decided that the first round is going to last somewhere around 4 days while we wait for everybody to check in. After that first round though, subsequent rounds will only last about 48 hours.

6. And finally, remember to have fun, and try not to feel too bitter if somebody else manages to yank the game you were hoping for out from under you at the last second, or whatever. After all, it's not their fault that they were born with such great taste in games.

Good luck everyone.
