Taking a new perspective on your game
I don't really have much to say here, because this rather deep topic is summed up perfectly in a 9-minute video here:




I think watching this is essential before even beginning to plan your game, and can make or break a designer. It's helped me get a new perspective on my game, showing me that beginning a game with the mechanics or art style is the wrong way to go. Especially if you're new to design like me, it's worth your time. Trust me :)

MDA is not a bad paradigm to think in, and is a better schism than most suggested direct alternatives I've heard. It's definitely required reading, which I'd lump with the likes of Rules of Play, A Book of Lenses, and A Theory of Fun. But new designers (including me ~4 years ago!) tend to stumble upon MDA and suddenly act like they've found some gnostic truth that makes game design suddenly easy.

It's a paradigm, not a panacea.
